Making wise food choices

When selecting foods, it's important to monitor the number of calories in each serving as well as the amount of total fat and saturated fat. Reading labels and ingredient statements is a way to discover what a product contains.

Each of the basic food groups supplies a different combination of nutrients, viatmins, and minerals. Let caloric needs and a healthy appetite be your guide. But remember, variety is the key to good nutrition (and it is the spice of life!) Here are some good recommendations to keep in mind:

Consume no more than 6 oz cooked lean meat, poultry, and fish per day. Look at the labels and choose the meat product that has the lowest amount of saturated fat.

Try to consume 5 or more vegetables and fruit each day. Remember, vegetables are a category of food you would want to increase when on a healthy eating plan!!

Try not to consume full fat dairy, pick low fat cheeses, milk, yogurts.

Say yes to tomato and broth based soups, while steering clear of cream based soups!
